Short CV

Marcel Karnstedt received his Diploma (M.Sc.) from the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, at the end of 2003. From January 2004 to February 2009 he worked as a research associate and teaching assistant with the Databases & Information Systems Group (head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Kai-Uwe Sattler) at the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. That is where he also successfully completed his Ph.D. (summa cum laude).

In March 2009 he moved to the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). He worked with the Unit for Information Mining and Retrieval (UIMR) and started as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the CLIQUE project on analyzing and visualizing large graphs and networks, specifically social networks and biological networks. Since December 2009 he also holds an adjunct lectureship at NUIG. From November 2010 to October 2013 he had been employed as a Senior Postdoc, mainly responsible for DERI's part of the ROBUST project, an EU-funded international project focusing on risks and opportunities in huge-scale business communities. Further, he actively contributed to the tasks of query processing and sensor mining in the SPITFIRE project on combining the "Internet of Things" with the "Web of Things".

From November 2013 to July 2015 he held a permanent position with Bell Labs in Ireland, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent. He worked with the Scalable Data Processing Activity as a part of the IP Platforms Research Program. His main responsibilities revolved around shaping the research agenda of the team focusing on large-scale data processing and data management for scalable analytics. He further played a key role in a project on next-generation communication. He worked on designing and integrating a novel context engine based on scalable text and graph analytics, as well as implementing core components of the server backend of the project's mobile app.

In July 2015, Marcel made his move from research into industry, though not completely abandoning his contact to science. He took the role of Senior Data Architect in the IT & Production of the Database Research Group (fka Corporate Markets / Databases) department of Springer Science+Business Media, before it became Springer Nature. He is currently leading a team of data specialists, software engineers and domain experts responsible for designing, implementing and delivering the industry-strength data & software architecture of the department. This involves responsibilities spanning from data management, processing and retrieval techniques (relational, NoSQL, graphs and IR), over modeling and building of domain-specific database solutions, to cutting-edge data analytics and mining.

Professional Interests

Large-scale data architectures, structured data, query processing and data mining
...always keen to push known limits, with a bias towards graph data & distributed approaches

Tailored data structures, architectures & methods for large-scale data management, processing & mining
Graph-based data models and structures, knowledge graphs & networks
Managing, querying and analyzing structured Web data, e.g., Linked Data
Large-scale graph mining and (social) network analysis
Universal data systems distributed at Internet scale, P2P databases
Resource-adaptive and quality-aware mining in data streams

The easiest (and, admittedly, eye-catching) way to illustrate the expertise I built with these interests is probably the tag cloud on top of this page. Created from the text of all my (English) publications - kudos to tagxedo.com!

Main Industrial Projects

For the following Springer Nature products we build and maintain the live data-backend, with a focus on productionized data integration, intelligent (aka semantic) search, fit-for-purpose storage tech with an overarching graph and several aspects of AI:
Springer Materials
one core contribution was the complete revision of the backend to support fit-for-purpose storage and a knowledge graph in order to enable SpringerMaterials Interactive and a novel intelligent search
Nano - A Nature Research solution
SpringerNature Experiments - Find, evaluate and implement experiments across the life sciences
Integration & productionization of ML approaches into Springer Nature's Database workflows, such as ADIS Pharmacovigilance and SpringerNature Experiments
This is the main research-to-business transition project of my time in Bell Labs:
Wyre - a novel business chat application where our focus was on predictive analytics and topic & behavior modeling

Main Academic Projects

ROBUST: Risk and Opportunity management of huge-scale BUSiness communiTy cooperation
a highlight was Whassappi - an event app for the Volvo Ocean Race 2012 in Galway, implementing all our latest approaches on social-media analytics to intelligently provide the most relevant tweets about the event
SPITFIRE: Semantic-Service Provisioning for the Internet of Things using Future Internet Research by Experimentation
CLIQUE: scalable computational techniques for the analysis and visualisation of network data
